This series of six lectures by Dr Tony Barrow will look at aspects of the archaeology of settlement in the Northern counties and the evidence it left behind. Beginning with rural landscapes, farmsteads, villages and the market towns, the course also explores industrial ports, seaside resorts and long forgotten remains of coastal industry.
The course comprises 6 two-hour sessions each of which explores different aspects of the variety of settlement that can be found in the landscapes of the region – from Berwick to Whitby:

Week 2 Northumberland Market Towns.
Week 3 Regional Seaside Resorts – their history and heritage.
Week 4 The South Durham Coal Ports.
Week 5 The industrial archaeology of the Yorkshire Alum Industry.
Week 6 The Smuggling Trade of N.E. England.
